really it is something you just have to try yourself.. it will take very little time to do a sample.. downlad the .flac, convert to wav, download the same track as a VBR mp3, convert that to wav ... then burn them onto a cd, and go out into your car.. you might want to make it a blind test, with putting the same tracks on the cd many times, in a jumbled order .. (etc. 1-flac sourced, 2-mp3, 3-mp3, 4-flac, 5-mp3, etc..) and write down the list on a piece of paper in your room. then go out to the car, and randomly pick tracks and write down what you think it is .. if you can 'hear' a diffrence between them ... then see if what you wrote down matched the original file listing from your burned cd.. if you can hear a diffrence and quality is important, download the flac...

for my own recordings, the ones I don't have the original lossless files around .. ijust quickly d/l the mp3's, burn them to wav for cds to listen to in my car.. they sound great to me and i'm never going to re-rip them to pollute the trading pool, just looking to listen to something fun in the car. I can't hear the degredation on the 1st gen mp3.

Thanks Tyler. Did you do the "MP3 Blind Test Challenge" or did you just figure out you could not hear the difference?

I did not do the mp3 blind listen, I already knew I wouldn't be able to hear the diffrence, and honestly, for my own listening I didn't care. I have first gen mp3's of all my cd's (riped EAC > WAV > mp3) and when I want to make a cd for my car i just take those mp3's > wav and burn.. the sound is near identical (sounds great to me!) and it's much easier and faster, esp for my own personal listening.. I agree with the others .. just download the VBR high quality mp3 and go from there. the shn / flac files all will still be here in the future in case you change your midn.

as long as the mp3 is in 128kbps or higher, its real tough to tell.On occation, their are files that are "sweetened"with compression which does make a huge difference. You can clearly hear the compression going in and out.The sound is not as good.If its a "pure 128 and above(on this archive its VBR mp3,192kbps which is real clean)you really cant tell.I would recommend doing a blind test like someone else suggested.Either way..WE GOT ALL THIS MUSIC and I am GRATEFUL FOR THAT!!!!
